Another Great Week!

It was so much fun to see all the parents Wednesday night!  I hope you enjoyed seeing our classroom and learning about everything that goes on in Room 26!  We have been very busy this week.  Here are some highlights:

Reading:  We read the story Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon.  With this story, we learned new vocabulary words, we practiced tracking with our fingers, and we were able to compare and contrast the differences between the two main characters.  We also reviewed what a story has - plot, characters, setting, beginning, middle and an ending.

Writing:  We finished up our Guess Who posters, did our Weekend news, and did journal writing this week.  I also introduced peer editing to the students, where they have a friend help them with their editing.

Math:  We are continuing our unit on addition and subtraction.  We also started story problems with addtion and subtraction.  We reviewed fact families, and we will be working with graphs next week.

Science:  We finished up our plant unit - all the students now have beautiful pea plants at home!  We also created our own lima bean, which showed all of the different parts.

Art:  Mrs. Thomason introduced us to zentangles, which focuses on patterns, lines and shading.  It was a very relaxing project that the students will continue to work on throughout the year.

Pictures for our class will be next Tuesday, September 28th at 1:50!  Please remember to send in your picture packet - either on that day or before!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Talk Like a Pirate Week

Dear parents,
Room 26 has been very busy this week!  We have been working with money and time, learning about lines in art, building up our stamina in our writing and reading, and observing our pea plants!  On Friday we celebrated the international Talk Like a Pirate Day, just for fun!
I would like to remind you that Wednesday, Sept. 22nd is curriculum night.
During your visit to our classroom, you will have the opportunity to sign up for fall conferences.  The dates for the conferences will be November 19th, 22nd and 23rd.  Please take a look at your calendars ahead of time to
see which of those dates work best for you.  The sign-up sheet will be on a first come first serve basis.
Your children are very excited for you to come in and see their classroom, their writing, their pea plants, and their art work!  I hope you can make it!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Room 26 News

I am looking forward to our first full week of school!  We have been practicing our rules and expectations in the classroom.  We have also been practicing getting to know our classmates.  This week we will be practicing getting into a routine of all the different procedures we are learning.
In Reading, we are practicing our stamina in both reading and writing.  We are up to a little more than 16 minutes of stamina for read to self, and we started stamina in writing today and made it a whopping 1 minute and 45 seconds!  I am sure by the end of the week we will be seeing huge improvements!
In Math we started our math timings, which we will be doing every day.  We are also working on writing our numbers up to 1,000 as well as reviewing time, money and number sense - such as odds and evens and counting by 2's, 5's and 10's.
In Writing we will be learning and practicing the 5 different parts of a friendly letter as well as learning about the writing process.
In Science we have planted our pea plants and examined a lima bean.  We are learning all the different parts of a plant and learning about life cycles.
We are extremely busy in Room 26!  Make sure to ask your child about everything he/she is learning!

What an exciting week!

Wow!  It was so much fun meeting my class this week!  I love the first week of school, when the students come with such enthusiasm and anticipation!  It is always exciting to meet new faces and see some familiar friends.  We had a very busy week, although it was short, learning classroom rules, and expectations.  We will be practicing these rules all year, so please ask your child if he/she remembers them!
I introduced the kids to Daily 5 this week, and amazingly enough, they all remembered it from last year!  We did a whoppin' 7 minutes and 27 seconds of read to self!  That was very impressive!  We will continue building up our stamina and introducing more aspects of the Daily 5 next week!
It has been a wonderful week, and I do believe that I have an exceptional class!

Thank you for all your support at home!
