Math
The math curriculum of the Snoqualmie Valley School District in the second grade is Growing with Mathematics, Units 1-12. Throughout the year we will focus on mathematics that help students to have flexibility and confidence in approaching problems, to have fluency in using mathematical skills, to use tools to solve problems, and to gain proficiency in evaluating their solutions. Students will also build a repertoire of ways to communicate about their mathematical thinking. Our goal is for your child’s enjoyment and appreciation for mathematics to grow.
We will focus on:
1. The ability to solve problems in multiple ways
2. Exploration of counting, comparing and combining numbers
3. Basic addition and subtraction math facts fluency
4. Exploring relationships among shapes and geometric patterns
5. Time, Money, & Measuring Skills
6. Communication using pictures, words, and numbers
You can help by...
• Practicing counting
• Encouraging mental math
• Playing card and board games, which require counting, adding and subtracting.
• Allowing your child to help make small purchases, counting out the coins and double checking the return change.
• Looking for opportunities to measure objects with a variety of tools
• Telling time to the hour, half-hour, quarter-hour, and minute (It helps if you have both analog and digital clocks in your house. )
